Gem Stone for Furniture: What the Trade Means by It

Gem stone is a trade term, and it means something different here than it does at a jeweller. It is the ornamental and semi-precious material sold in slab form, at architectural scale, for tables, tops, wall panels and inlay. Agate, amethyst, malachite, tiger's eye, lapis, jasper, petrified wood — used the way stone is used, not the way a stone is set in a ring.

Is gem stone the same as jewellery-grade stone?

No. The trade grades a stone for a ring by clarity, colour and cut, and slab material is not graded that way — a slab has to be judged on how the pattern runs across the piece, and the piece decides where the pattern falls. Two slabs of the same material can be worth very different amounts for a table, and a single slab can be worth a great deal for one position and nothing for another.

Which materials are sold as gem stone?

Agate, amethyst, malachite, tiger's eye, lapis lazuli, jasper, quartz, carnelian, and petrified wood among them. The list is not a range — these are different minerals with different properties, and what makes one of them a good top is not what makes another one a good top. Malachite is opaque and richly patterned; agate and quartz are translucent and take light; tiger's eye shifts as the light moves.

How is a gem stone slab made?

Most of it is assembled rather than quarried whole. Natural chips, slices and fossil material are set in epoxy or resin, cast into a slab, ground and polished. That is why the material is sold in standard sizes from 10 to 30 mm and why it is non-porous and needs no sealer. Petrified wood is the exception that behaves like a natural stone — it is a solid piece of mineralised fossil, cut and polished like any block.

Is gem stone the same as architectural onyx or jade?

No, and the trade is careful about the difference. Architectural onyx is banded calcite — a layered limestone, sold in the trade as onyx marble, and it is on its own page here. Jade is a true gemstone and it is also on its own page. The gem stone line is the family that is neither: the ornamental and semi-precious materials, whether they are natural slab or resin-bound composite. The words get mixed up in ordinary conversation, which is why the site keeps them apart.

What can be done with it for a furniture piece?

The same things as with any other material, with the difference that translucency is usually the point. A backlit agate or quartz panel, a bar front, a statement top where the pattern is the piece, inlay or mosaic detail set into a marble or onyx top, and small objects cut rather than slabbed. What has to be agreed before cutting is where the pattern falls — with petrified wood especially, the position of the growth rings is the design, and it is agreed on the actual slab.

Is it tough enough for a table?

For most furniture, yes. Resin-bound slab is hard and takes wear well; the vulnerability is the edge, which can chip if it is knocked, and a scratch from abrasive cleaning shows on a polished surface. Petrified wood is a mineralised solid and behaves like a natural stone. What we do not do is quote an abrasion or scratch-resistance figure for a specific material without testing it, because these are different minerals with different answers.

What this page does not cover

What this page does not cover: this page does not publish a hardness value, a translucency value, a weight, a price or a grade for any gem material, because each one is a different mineral and a figure for one would say nothing about the next. The thickness range and the description of how resin-bound slabs are made are published figures for the product category. We have not tested a specific slab for abrasion resistance, stain resistance or edge impact, and we do not claim it. Nor does this page cover how a particular piece will look — that is agreed on the actual slab before cutting, and it is a photograph and an approval, not a promise in advance.
